The OIE reference laboratory for Equine infectious Anaemia (EIA), located within the Virology Division of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Lazio e della Toscana, Rome Italy, operates according to the ISO/IEC 17025 with accreditation and validation of the serological methods (ELISA, agar gel Immunodiffusion and immunoblotting) for the diagnosis of EIA.
The laboratory produces and distributes upon request the diagnostic kits for the execution of these methods. It regularly organizes interlaboratory trials and provides services for the standardization and validation of EIA serological diagnostic kits.
In addition, the laboratory provides scientific and technical support as well as training in the diagnosis for EIA.
The laboratory also offers, at international level, high quality diagnostic services using serological, molecular and virological methods.
The laboratory conducts studies on the phylogenesis of EIAV and the immunological response of the hosts. In addition, support is also available for the development of surveillance plans for the eradication and control of the infection.
