IZSLT Laboratory of Apiculture

The “Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lazio and Toscana M. Aleandri” (IZSLT) is a public body of the Italian National Health Service, responsible for performing official controls in the field of animal health and food safety. Within IZSLT, the first laboratory entirely dedicated to the apiculture sector was established in 2009.
The main scope of the IZSLT Laboratory of Apiculture (DG 210/2021) is the diagnosis of honey bee diseases as well as carrying out morphometrical analysis, training, and research activities. 
Since 2021, the IZSLT Laboratory of Apiculture is the “FAO Reference Centre for Animal Health and Food Security – Discipline Apiculture, Health and Biosecurity” and the “WOAH Collaborating Centre for Good Beekeeping Management Practices and Biosecurity Measures in the Apiculture Sector”.
The collaborative network of the Laboratory of Apiculture encompasses state agencies, universities, research performing organisations, laboratories, and international organizations (FAO, WOAH).
The current Head of the IZSLT Laboratory of Apiculture is Dr. Giovanni Formato.
