The “Società Scientifica Veterinaria per l’Apicoltura” (SVETAP) is the first Italian Veterinary Scientific Society in Apiculture, established on 03 October 2016 and located at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Lazio e della Toscana in Rome.

SVETAP members are Italian veterinary doctors and students from all areas of veterinary medicine who are interested in bees and beekeeping.
Nowadays the beekeeping branch requires adequate technical and scientific support to face the health emergencies of the last years (SHB, Vespa velutina, varroatosis, virosis, Nosema ceranae, neonicotinoids….). For this reason, it is necessary to guarantee the training of competent veterinarians, prepared to face the new challenges that beekeeping continuously presents.
The main goals of SVETAP, following the great changes that have characterized Italian beekeeping in the last decades, are:
- to enhance and promote the professional skills of veterinarians in beekeeping, bee health, food safety and public health;
- to cooperate in a “One Health vision” with all the actors in the beekeeping chain;
- to promote research, dissemination and information to all apiculture operators.
This conference offers a great opportunity for the mission of our association as it represents an opportunity of professional update and training of veterinarians able to deal with the health issues related to beekeeping.
